: The main message conveyed through this documentary is that the partition was entirely mishandled. No prior preparations were made to handle such many refugees. Also, limited time for migration and the late announcement of borders were other factors that caused the loss of lives during the process.
Yes, I already knew many things shown in the documentary such as the Cabinet meeting, the arrival of Lord Mount Batten to find a solution for India, and Direct Action Day.
I expected that documentary would be
like a story but it was a very different experience and listening to people
present at the spot give you a different feeling and it looks like if you are at
that place just experiencing everything that happened.
Before watching the documentary I really wanted to know the
exact reasons that caused such a massive amount of deaths and why riots arose during partition.
The subject of the documentary is the Pak-Indo Partition, the events that occurred during the entire partition process, and the reasons due to which the country which was at peace a year ago turned into a civil war situation
The subcontinent was at peace in 1948 but then in just a year situation was exactly the opposite when Britishers decided to leave. Since Hindus were in majority in the subcontinent so Muslims were not ready to live as a minority in India. They demanded a separate homeland where Muslims could become rulers and lead life according to their customs. But the Population was unevenly distributed throughout India. None of the main religious groups Hindus, Muslims including Sikhs were ready to live as minority. After Cabinet mission when no decision was made Jinnah assembled a large mass of people in Lahore and called for strike all over India called the Direct Action Day. After that a large numbers of killings about 5000 were done in Calcutta and riots spread in other parts of India as well such as Bengal. After this a meeting was held among leaders of India .When lord Mountbatten revealed that India will be partitioned, a chaotic situation arose because this wasn't finalled what will be the borders of the two countries. As Britishers were in hurry to leave India because it was costing them so only three months were given for partition. Since borders were'nt finalized so migration was taking place even after partition. During the span of three months about 15 million people migrated and about 1 million were killed. The main reasons were that each majority wanted its area clean from other minorities
. Thus the partition was achieved at the cost of 1 million deaths.
In some parts of documentary we can see that in some situations some communities also helped other communities in such a chaotic situation. This appealed me the most that in such a horrifying situation some people still were standing with humanity.
I received information about various events of the partition and came to know about the entire process that how portion occured.
The main drawback of the documentary was that it only explained the
situation between Muslims and Hindus and did not give the details about how
bristishers mishandled partition and they were not even interested anymore to
wait for a year or two after separation was finalized which was one of the
reasons behind those massive killings.
I would definitely recommend this documentary to my friends because as citizen of Pakistan we should have the information of how partition took place and through this we can know all about it.
